Brief Flames

David Foster Wallace said of fiction:

“There’s a kind of Ah-ha! Somebody at least for a moment feels about something or sees something the way that I do. It doesn’t happen all the time. It’s these brief flashes or flames, but I get that sometimes. I feel unalone – intellectually, emotionally, spiritually. I feel human and unalone and that I’m in a deep, significant conversation with another consciousness in fiction and poetry in a way that I don’t with other art.”

This type of human connection is what pushes to write and read, and the possibility of providing people with those same transient flames of unaloneness is what inspired us to do our own magazine.

Excited to see what people have to offer over the next couple of months. Submissions start tomorrow at and will likely continue through midsummer, depending on the volume of submissions we receive. More details regarding word count preferences, format of documents and other elements of the Sobotka coming tomorrow.

Thanks for all the initial support and I really look forward to reading some pieces that make me feel a bit more human and unalone over the coming weeks and months.
